Blackberry Acai Smoothie

Acai Blackberry SmoothieHow to add chia seeds to a smoothie

Lately, I’ve been experimenting with chia seeds. The little seeds are known for their omega-3 fatty acids along with increasing your daily iron, fiber, calcium, and magnesium. I’ve read that adding chia seeds to smoothies is an easy way to get a daily serving. The trick is to soak the seeds in water before blending them into the drink.

If you have any chia seed recipes let me know. I loved trying them in my blackberry acai smoothie.

Blackberry Acai Smoothie

Yield: 1 serving        Prep Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
½ cup fresh blackberries
1 packet of frozen acai puree (approx. 3.5 oz.)*
1 tablespoon of soaked chia seeds
1/2 frozen banana

Directions:

  1. Soak the chia seeds in a small jar: add 4 tablespoons of water for every tablespoon of chia seeds. Cover the jar, and place the seeds in the refrigerator for several hours. The seeds will soak up the water and become gelatinous. **
  2. When you’re ready to make your smoothie, blend all of the ingredients together. Pour the smoothie into a large glass and enjoy.

Tips:
* You can replace the acai puree with 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries.
** The soaked chia seeds will last a few days in the refrigerator.

  1. This will be my first time using chia seeds, so will get them ready for my smoothie. Never used acai purée. Is this something you make or can you get the frozen acai purée at the supermarket?

    1. Hi Jenifer. I found the frozen acai puree at the market in the natural foods frozen section. I know at one point Costco was carrying it too. You can use them interchangeably with blueberries.

  2. I really want to like chia seeds, because of their health benefits. But they get stuck in my teeth and it puts me off… I’ve got a big bag of them just sitting in my pantry, maybe I’ll give them another try and soak them like you suggest. I’ll let you know how it goes.

    1. I know what you mean about chia seeds. If you soak them, gel forms around the seed. It’s strange, but when I make chia seed water they never seem to stick. I also use golden chia seeds instead of black. Let me know how it goes 🙂

    1. I need to splurge on a Vitamix 🙂 I’m sure it saves time with all the benefits. By the way, the Baba ghanoush that you made for your blog was simply amazing. I made it for my family and everyone was blown away. 🙂

    1. I’ve used flaxseeds as a replacement for eggs, but never chia seeds. 10 minutes is a lot better than an hour 🙂 Your blog is my go-to for cooking and preserving. Thanks Michelle for all of your wonderful tips.
